While the holiday season brings with it images of giving, joy and sharing, for many it brings stress and worries that may go unchecked. While seasonal affective disorder (SAD) may not be caused by directly by the holidays in some (in can arrive earlier as summer transitions to autumn), it can be exacerbated by additional stress of the holiday season. These include but are not limited to family dynamics, financial worries, and increases in triggers for overindulging and addictive behaviors. Symptoms can be mild, moderate, or severe and can manifest in many different ways – such as mild irritability, moodiness, or feeling slightly “down” to lacking motivation or not wanting to get out of bed for days. A common symptom that many experience is a drop in energy. The Mayo Clinic lists common, general symptoms of SAD as:
- Feeling depressed most of the day, nearly every day
- Losing interest in activities you once enjoyed
- Having low energy
- Having problems with sleeping
- Experiencing changes in your appetite or weight
- Feeling sluggish or agitated
- Having difficulty concentrating
- Feeling hopeless, worthless or guilty
- Having frequent thoughts of death or suicide

As stated in the Mayo Clinic article, the use of light therapy can be beneficial in the treatment of SAD. Also of benefit, can acupuncture and nutrition therapy; they can be powerful tools for those experiencing mild to moderate symptoms of seasonal depression – singularly or together. Both types of therapy greatly influence the body’s neurotransmitters and therefore, can have a large impact on anxiety and depression.

You’re allowed to indulge a bit, just keep portions small when it comes to holiday desserts and make sure you limit how often you eat them. Going the whole season without any treats is cruel and will most likely end in binging later, so have your guilty pleasures, just keep them in moderation. continue reading
There’s a certain level of mysticism surrounding the ancient holistic practice of acupuncture. Those who haven’t tried it may view it as some sham practice with no real value or benefit. On the other hand, those who have tried are fully aware of its powerful effects on the human body.
